Years ago I had a retail store. I can’t tell you how happy I am to be relaxed as we head into what is a huge week for most florists. I’ll take the hustle of a wedding any day over the chaos that comes with Valentine’s Day. That said I wish all the best to those brave souls who are open for business as well as all those in the industry making all the beauty possible!!

I’ve been away for awhile, but I’m back! Actually I didn’t go anywhere, but just took the month of January, as I usually do, to step back and look at the big picture. One of the perks of this business is that it’s very seasonal which allows time to do just that.
Part of the big picture for me involves looking at how I use social media and how that has evolved over the years. When I first entered into the world of Instagram, I saw it as an avenue to tell others what I was doing right then—summing up an instant in an image. Over time, the community and the way we interact within it has changed. We post images of our finished work by professional photographers—this seemed a bit unauthentic at first; however, I have come to realize that social media evolves as does the way we interact with it. If we’re honest, I think we often have a love/hate relationship with it. I’m beginning to understand, however, that I have a choice in how I use and let social media affect me. If I see that scrolling through endless images of beautiful work instills a feeling of “Why am I not doing that kind of work?”, then I may need to step away for awhile. Or I may simply need to get involved in the incredibly encouraging community at my fingertips by honestly responding to the work of others with encouraging words of my own. If I truly believe in the transcendent power of beauty, I should be thankful for the extravagance offered as I scroll through my feed and relish the opportunity to be surrounded by such beauty. So here’s to a new season—and may it be filled with beauty!! (By the way, this image was taken by @graciebyrdjones as part of a feature coming soon to The Effortless Chic blog by @jenpinkston—thanks Gracie!!)
